Where To See Sandhill Cranes

Viewing Sandhill Cranes in summer and winter offers two very different experiences. During the winter, cranes gather in large numbers throughout California’s Central Valley. In summer, they spread across northern wetlands and grasslands to breed and raise their young.

— Before You Go

Bring Binoculars

A good pair of binoculars allows you to observe cranes and other wildlife clearly while maintaining a safe and respectful distance.

Visit Near Sunrise or Sunset

Cranes are often most active early in the morning and near sunset as they travel between feeding areas and overnight roosting sites.

Keep a Respectful Distance

Remain on designated roads, trails, and viewing areas. Never approach, feed, or disturb cranes, especially during nesting and breeding seasons.

Check Current Conditions

Hours, road access, tours, and crane activity can vary throughout the year. Check with the managing organization before planning your visit.
